Frequently asked questions
The premier economics problem solving competition in the Netherlands. Students in teams of three answer a set of economics questions. The questions are set by professors from different Dutch universities and relate to varied branches of economics.
1. You are allowed to use a NON-programmable calculator.
2. You are NOT allowed to use books or notes.
3. You are NOT allowed to use a dictionary.
4. Any kind of electronic devices must be switched off during the examination. All devices need to be stored in your bag.
5. It is not allowed to use the restroom during the first 30 minutes and the last 30 minutes of the exam.
6. Volunteers will be present to assist you with any other specific concerns.
NEO is a full-day event involing:
• Three-hour competition
• Workshops
• A keynote speech
• Opportunity to network and meet economics students from across the Netherlands.

This years NEO is an in-person only event being held at Erasmus University in Rotterdam. Unfortunately, we are unable to facilitate online attendees.
No, registration and participation in the NEO is entirely free for students. This is possible due to the generous support of our sponsors.
The questions are submitted by economics professors from across the Netherlands. They cover a broad range of economic fields. We are not able to provide a copy of previous years questions.
Aside from bragging rights, winners receive prize money.
• First prize wins 300 EUR.
• Second prize wins 150 EUR.
• Third prize wins 75 EUR.
• The highest scoring bachelor team also wins 75 EUR.
While team registrations are preferred, it is possible to register as an individual.
Individual participants will be matched with a team on the event day. While we cannot guarantee complete teams of three, we will make every effort to facilitate this.
All Bachelors and Masters students are eligible to participate.
We welcome students from universities across the Netherlands. You don’t need to be doing an economics degree, however, having taken some economics subjects will be helpful in answering the questions.
